Iran upgrading air defense capabilities rapidly: Commander

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Given the nature of the aerial threats, which necessitate quick response with high precision, Iran is making rapid progress in the air defense sphere through the efforts of its local experts, a top commander explained.
The Air Defenses mission requires high speed and accuracy considering the nature of threats, Lieutenant Commander of Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base General Ali Reza Sabahi-Fard said on Tuesday, during a visit to an air defense base southeast of Iran.

He underlined that the Iranian universities and industrial sector have built up a close partnership over the past years to help the country counter any potential threats.

The Air Defense is rapidly upgrading its capabilities in the entire fields, the commander stressed.

Earlier on April 26, Lieutenant Commander of Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base for Executive Affairs General Shahrokh Shahram announced that the Iranian military technicians have successfully mounted new types of missiles on the air defense systems that used to launch only a specific type of missiles.

He explained that researchers at the Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base, in cooperation with the Defense Ministrys Aerospace Industries Organization, could equip the Mersad missile defense system with the home-made Sayyad 2 (Hunter 2) missiles.

General Shahrokh noted that the Mersad system could already launch the Shalamcheh missiles alone, but the Sayyad 2 missiles have now enhanced the systems capabilities.

Moreover, the commander added, the military experts have been able to equip the mobile version of S-200 air defense system with the upgraded Sayyad 3 missiles.

Getting advantage of the Sayyad 3 missiles, the S-200 can hit the targets with medium altitude, Shahrokh added.
