A high-ranking Iranian official has headed to the Russian capital, Moscow, to discuss the latest developments in the region with Russian officials.
On Saturday night, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian left Tehran for the Russian capital, where he will exchange views on the developments in West Asia and North Africa with senior Russian officials.
During his stay, the Iranian diplomat is scheduled to meet with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov to elaborate on Tehrans position on the need for a political solution to the nearly three years of crisis in Syria.
Amir-Abdollahian and Bogdanov have in turns been hosting bilateral meetings on Syria since the outbreak of the foreign-sponsored militancy in the Arab state in March 2011.
On November 18, 2013, Bogdanov said Moscow regards Iran as its main partner in resolving the developments in the region, particularly the ongoing conflict in Syria. He added that Russia welcomes the exchange of views with Iran on regional issues and the Syrian crisis in particular.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Over 130,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the unrest.
According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
