Iran urges attention to humanitarian crisis in Syria

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham has reaffirmed the Islamic Republics position on the need for attention to the humanitarian aspects of the nearly three years of crisis in Syria.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been extensively dispatching aid to Syrian people, and been facilitating assistance extended by other countries within the framework of cooperation with Syrian government. This humanitarian action is still in progress, Afkham said on Monday.

She also called for non-interference in Syrias internal affairs and an end to support for terrorist groups that have incurred many losses on the countrys people and infrastructure, stating that humanitarian aid must not be exploited for political objectives.

On Sunday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said assistance to the strife-stricken Syrian people, fight against terrorism and a negotiated political settlement to the Syrian crisis are at the center of the Islamic Republics attention.

He also elaborated on Irans cooperation with some European states, including Switzerland, to help the needy people in various parts of Syria.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Over 130,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the unrest.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
