A former US ambassador to Iraq says the normalization of Tehran-Washington ties is plausible and can be beneficial to both nations and the international community.Edward Peck described on Sunday the normalization of Iran-US ties as possible and logical and noted that such a development can be very beneficial to the Iranian and American nations and many countries in the world.
The veteran US diplomat argued that the resumption of Iran-US ties may not take place in the short run as there are many elements that seek to hinder the development.
On September 26, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his US counterpart John Kerry briefly met in New York, following Irans ministerial talks with the six world powers over Tehrans nuclear energy program on the sidelines of the 68 Session of the UN General Assembly.
A day later, Irans President Hassan Rouhani received a call from US President Barack Obama as he was heading to the John F. Kennedy International Airport to fly back to Tehran following the UN session.
The two presidents stressed Tehran and Washingtons political will to swiftly resolve the Wests dispute over Irans nuclear energy program, and exchanged viewpoints on various topics, including cooperation on different regional issues.
The phone conversation was the first direct communication between an Iranian and a US president since Irans Islamic Revolution in 1979.
