Karzai says he, Kerry not reached agreement on bilateral security deal

TEHRAN (FNA)- President Hamid Karzai said that a long-delayed deal on the future of US forces in Afghanistan was close to completion but differences remained after talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

"After several months of negotiation, and intense talks yesterday and today, we have reached a series of agreements," Karzai told reporters in Kabul on Saturday, Voice of Russia reported.

"The BSA (Bilateral Security Agreement) has a lot of items, one is about immunity for foreign and US soldiers - we didn't have a united opinion on this issue".

John Kerry and Hamid Karzai said the question of immunity for US troops would have to be decided by an assembly of elders and leaders.

The agreement would help determine, among other things, how many US troops remained in Afghanistan after 2014 when most foreign combat troops are due to exit.

US officials have previously said they want the pact finalized by the end of the month.
