Iran welcomes Ramadan truce in Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran welcomed truce between the Syrian government forces and rebel fighters during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking to reporters during a weekly press briefing here in Tehran on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi welcomed offer of truce by some opposition groups in Syria for the holy month of Ramadan.

"If all the major parties engaged in the conflict want a truce, it will be desirable and we hope that different groups and terrorists will put down their weapons and move towards talks with the Syrian government."

Yet, the foreign ministry presser pointed to the last year proposal of UN-Arab League Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi for ceasefire in Syrian in Ramadan which was violated by the armed opposition groups, and said, "Unfortunately, at that time the dissident groups didnt accept the proposal and didnt let the trucebe implemented in Ramadan despite its one-sided implementation by the Syrian government."

"We want the dissidents to put down their weapons and end the clashes and come to the solution of talks and we hope that complete truce will be established and engaged parties move towards talks," he reiterated.

The new Syrian opposition president yesterday asked for a truce in the Muslims' holy fasting month of Ramadan.

But elsewhere in his remarks, the Syrian National Coalition (SNC)President, Ahmad Jarba, said the rebels are now having a weak position and won't attend the Geneva talks, adding that they are waiting for new weapons consignments arriving from Saudi Arabia to boost their position on the ground and find a more influential status in any posible talks with the Damascus government.

Analysts believe that Jarba's truce offer is aimed at a pause in war until his troops are equipped with new weapons.
