Zarif, Lavrov, Cavusoglu discuss Syria in Moscow

April 29, The Iran Project - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Moscow on Saturday (April 28) to attend a meeting with his Russian and Turkish counterparts aimed at discussing the latest developments in Syria.

During his day-long visit, Zarif held talks with his Russian and Turkish counterparts Sergey Lavrov and Mevlut Cavusoglu respectively.

In a meanwhile, the three foreign ministers also attended the Moscow meeting on Syria and Astana Peace Process and eventually issued a joint statement at the end of their meeting.

At a joint presser with his Turkish and Russian counterparts in Moscow, after the trilateral meeting, Zarif lashed out at US government's destructive role in the region.

If there is any country to be held accountable for its destructive role in the region, that is the government of US, said Zarif at the joint presser.

Talking to his Russian counterpart, Zarif expressed his satisfaction over Iran-Russia cooperation which is being developed in line with reinforcing regional and international peace and security and fighting terrorism.

Lavrov, for his part, lauded Iran's constructive role in the peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis.

The Russian FM also expressed his delight about the Iranian national football team being present in the FIFA World Cup of 2018 in Russia.

As per the statement, the three ministers underlined their commitment to Syrias independence, unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty within the framework of the UN charter and called all countries of the world to respect the law.

They also reiterated their determination for bolstering trilateral cooperation based on issued joint statements by the presidents of the three countries of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation and Turkey on November 22, 2017 and April 4, 2018.

Talking to reporters at the end of the meeting, Zarif said that the gathering was held to consolidate the fact the Astana talks have been the only process that could achieve relative success in settling the Syrian crisis.

He also noted that development of economic cooperation was discussed with the Russian and Turkish side.
