FM meets UN Syria envoy in Vienna

Vienna, May 17, IRNA Visiting Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif held talks with the United Nations Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura here Monday evening.


The two discussed issues of mutual interest, the Syrian crisis in particular.

Zarif is currently in Vienna along with a number of the managers and deputies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to attend a two-day international conference on Syria and Libya which is to start on Tuesday.

The Iranian minister has followed a busy agenda since he arrived here earlier on Monday.

Zarif has earlier met with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop and Feredica Mogherini, the European Union's foreign policy chief at the Coburg Hotel where the landmark nuclear deal was made in July 2015 between Iran and the Group 5+1 ending more than a decade of nuclear dispute between the two sides.

Zarif and Mogherini discussed latest developments on the implementation of the nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action and the crisis in Syria.

While in Vienna, the Iranian delegation is to hold separate talks with European and American participants of the meeting on Syria, to discuss elimination of the obstacles hindering the implementation of the JCPOA.

The meeting is to be attended by 17 member of the International Syria Support Group and co-chaired by the United States and Russia. The European Union and Arab League countries also participate the meetias along with Turkey, Iran and China.
