Kerry: US congress rejecting nuclear deal to boost Irans weapon program

John Kerry warned that Congress' possible decision to veto the Iran nuclear agreement may backfire and result in Tehran's development of weapons.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) If the US Congress rejects the Iran nuclear agreement forged inVienna byinternational negotiators, Tehran will embark onobtaining a nuclear weapon, US State Secretary John Kerry warned members ofthe Senate Foreign Relations Committee onThursday.
"If the US Congress moves tounilaterally reject what was agreed toin Vienna, the result will be the United States ofAmerica walking away fromevery one ofthe restrictions that we have achieved.

The US state secretary continued it would grant Tehran the green light to double the pace ofits uranium enrichment, proceed full speed ahead witha heavy water reactor, install new and more efficient centrifuges.

Additionally, if the nuclear deal is vetoed byCongress, Iran would begin ramping upits nuclear program all withoutthe unprecedented inspections and transparency measures that we have secured, Kerry warned.

On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group comprising the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, reached an agreement toensure the peaceful nature ofTehran's nuclear program inexchange forsanctions relief.

Kerry also said walking away fromthe Tehran deal would leave the United States alone, and result inthe five other negotiators walking away from the tough multilateral sanctions regime that theyve helped toput inplace, and we will have squandered the best chance we have had tofix this problem throughpeaceful means.

Kerrys remarks come afterthe UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing the nuclear agreement torelieve Iran ofsanctions and ensure the peaceful nature ofTehrans nuclear program. The UN will keep inplace, however, an arms embargo againstIran and a ban onballistic missile technology.

Meanwhile, Congress now has less than60 days tofully review the nuclear agreement, duringwhich time President Barack Obama cannot waive or suspend congressional sanctions againstIran that are currently inplace.
