Iran: Guards chief criticizes foreign minister

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- The head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard has rejected comments by the country's foreign minister about the U.S. military's capability to inflict damage on the Islamic Republic's armed forces.
The statement from Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari is seen as part of the political pushback by hard-liners against President Hassan Rouhani's new moderate administration.

Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency quoted Jafari as saying Tuesday that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's statement last week that the U.S. could paralyze Iran's defensive system in an attack "was incorrect."

Gen. Jafari said the U.S. can only destroy up to 20 percent of Iran's missile capability if it bombs the country heavily.

Dozens of lawmakers asked Rouhani Sunday to consider whether Zarif should lose his job over the remarks.
