Iran to send envoy to Saudi Arabia 'soon': FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has said that the Islamic Republic will soon send its ambassador to Riyadh.

Referring to plans to reopen the embassies of the two countries based on an agreement in China in March, Amirabdollahian said that the reopening of the Saudi embassy in Tehran and the appointment of the Iranian ambassador to Saudi Arabia will be announced soon".

The top diplomat added that normalizing ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia is "a huge potential" for the two nations, the region, and the Islamic world.

Amirabdollahian and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud met andissued a joint statement to resume diplomatic and political relations after some seven years in Beijing, China on April 6, 2023. Accordingly, the two sides agreed to reopen the embassies and consulates as soon as possible.

Technical delegations from Tehran and Riyadh have already visited the diplomatic missions in the past weeks to make the necessary arrangement and preparations for reopening.

Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore their diplomatic ties and reopen their embassies after several days of intense talks hosted by China on March 10.

In a joint statement after the agreement, Tehran and Riyadh stressed the importance of respecting each others national sovereignty and avoiding interference in each others internal affairs.

They also agreed to implement a security cooperation agreement from April 2001 and another accord from May 1998 to enhance their cooperation in various fields, such as economy, trade, investment, technology, science, culture, sports, and youth affairs.

The dtente can reduce tensions in a region that has been plagued by instability for decades.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran in January 2016 after Iranian protesters, enraged by the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr by the Saudi government, stormed its embassy in Tehran.
