India, Russia, Iran prepare for crucial meet for final removal of INSTC hurdles



Sputnik - Indias Minister of Commerce Suresh Prabhu, while meeting a high-level Russian business delegation in New Delhi, hoped that the operationalization of INSTC, the shortest multimodal transportation route linking the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf via Iran to Russia and North Europe will transform the business activities in the region.




TheInternational North-South Corridor (INSTC) will be operationalized very soon asNew Delhi, Tehran and Moscow are hopeful ofremoving all the hurdles innext trilateral meet scheduled onNovember 23.
"In the 23rdNovember 2018 trilateral meeting onINSTC all issues may be resolved inorder tooperationalize the route asearly aspossible," Suresh Prabhu, India's Commerce Minister said.


Trade representatives, policymakers and officials ofIndia, Russia, and Iran had held a closed-door meeting inMoscow onOctober 19 onthe range ofregional issues including operationalization ofthe corridor which can transport an estimated 20 to30 million tonnes ofgoods per year. The corridor will reduce time and cost by30% to40%.

Days afterthe trilateral meet inMoscow, New Delhi alongwith Tehran and Kabul had clearly indicated that they were not going toslow downtheir interaction underUS sanction threat. The three countries, atthe first trilateral meeting ofthe Coordination Council ofthe Chabahar agreement inTehran onOctober 23, have referred the relevant clauses ofthe 2016 Chabahar agreement toa follow-up committee tofinalize the draft protocol required toharmonise standards and customs to "fully operationalize" the strategic Iranian port.

India has put high stakes ondeveloping the Chabahar Port inIran asit will provide a crucial transit point inINSTC and some other connectivity projects aimed atincreasing Indian trade withCentral Asia.
Meanwhile, duringthe 19thAnnual Bilateral Summit held inNew Delhi onOctober 5, India and Russia called forthe development ofthe 16-year old agreement onINSTC "by finalizing pending issuesthrough bilateral discussions aswell asdiscussions withother partner countries atthe earliest".


India's Minister ofCommerce Prabhu has said that there is immense potential forthe two countries tofurther expand economic ties and move beyondbuyer seller relationship.
"There is a possibility forRussian investments inDelhi-Mumbai industrial corridor, smart cities, railways, public transport, sanitation and low cost housing," Suresh Prabhu said beforethe Russian delegation.


India's pharma exports toRussia constitute a sizable chunk butpossibilities ofjoint investments are being considered byleading Indian pharma companies underRussia's Pharma 2020 program.

Commerce Minister Prabhu also explained the procedure and policy forestablishing the green field and brown field airports intier-II and III cities inIndia. Russian investments may also be explored inthe pilot training center coming upin the country. India has invited Russian aerospace companies toparticipate inthe global aviation summit tobe held inJanuary 2019.
