Beijing ready to cooperate with Moscow to preserve Iran nuclear deal - Xi



Sputnik - China regrets the unilateral decision of the United States to pull out from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), informally known as the Iran nuclear deal, and is ready to conduct joint work with Russia and other states to preserve this agreement, Chinese President Xi Jinping said.



"We are upset bythe US unilateral decision towithdraw fromthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction onthe Iranian nuclear program. China is ready tocooperate withRussia and other countries topreserve the JCPOA," Chinese President Xi Jinping said duringthe summit ofthe Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held inthe Chinese city ofQingdao.


The SCO summit is being held inthe Chinese coastal city ofQingdao onJune 9-10. There are plans tosign about20 joint-documents atthe summit; the most hotly anticipated ofthese is the Qingdao Declaration.
"It is necessary tolay a firm foundation forensuring peace and security together, it is important toactively implement the SCO cooperation program onfighting the three evil forces [terrorism, separatism, extremism] for2019-2021, tocontinue the holding of 'Peace Mission' joint anti-terrorism drills, and tostrengthen cooperation indefense and security, [in particular,] information security aswell asthrough law enforcement agencies," Xi stated.


The Chinese president noted that all the SCO countries should respect an independent path ofdevelopment chosen byeach ofthe SCO states and take intoaccount the key interests and concerns ofeach other.

The SCO, established in2001, is currently comprised ofeight permanent member states: Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status, while Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka have the status ofdialogue partners. The organization's key goals include cooperation inthe area ofinternational security and counter-terrorism.
