US to raise concerns over Irans ballistic tests at UN council Monday

US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said that the United States will address its concerns over a series of ballistic missile tests by Iran on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The United States will address its concerns over a series of ballistic missile tests by Iran on Monday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said in a statement.

UN Security Council Resolution 2231 calls upon Iran not to undertake any launches of ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering a nuclear weapon. We will raise these dangerous launches directly at Council consultations, which we have called for, on Monday, Power stated Friday.
Power stressed that Washington considers the recent launches provocative and destabilizing, and designed to threaten to Israel.

We condemn such threats against another UN Member State and one of our closest allies, she added. We will therefore continue to insist on full implementation of Resolution 2231, which expressly prohibits third-party support to Iran's ballistic missile program, as we also consider our appropriate national response.

Earlier this week, Iranian state media reported the countrys Revolutionary Guard Corps carried out a ballistic missile launch as one of the last steps in testing the capabilities of Iranian-produced missiles.

As soon as the reports emerged, the Obama administration said the launch did not violate the nuclear agreement reached in July 2015, but added it could have violated at least one UN Security Council resolution.

US lawmakers have since threatened more sanctions on Iran while the Obama administration has warned that if the reports are confirmed, the United States would raise the matter with the UN Security Council.
