Kerry: US congress should delay Iran sanctions renewal

John Kerry said that the US Congress should postpone an immediate vote to reauthorize the 2006 Iran Sanctions Act until further along in the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The US Congress should postpone an immediate vote toreauthorize the 2006 Iran Sanctions Act untilfurther alongin the implementation ofthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA), Secretary ofState John Kerry told the Senate Appropriations Committee onWednesday.
"I dont think there is a need torush here. I would liketo see how the [JCPOA] implementation goes," Kerry said when asked if he supports the immediate congressional reauthorization ofthe Iran Sanctions Act.


The 2006 sanctions againstIran are set toexpire atthe end of2016. US lawmakers have argued toreauthorize the act inthe event Iran fails tocomply withthe terms ofthe internationally negotiated nuclear agreement reached last July.

Kerry encouraged lawmakers to "not immediately" consider the Iran sanctions reauthorization, saying, "we are just beginning now tosee the full implementation" ofthe JCPOA.

Under the JCPOA, Iran was given relief fromall nuclear-related sanctions inexchange formaintaining a peaceful nature ofits nuclear program.
