18 May 2014 - 13:31

The eighth edition of Fajr International Poetry Festival has kicked off during a ceremony in the Iranian capital city of Tehran.
Many Iranian and international poets and literary scholars attended the opening ceremony held at Tehran’s Arasbaran Cultural Center on May 17.

Some 18 Iranian and foreign poets presented their programs at the first day of the festival.

Iran has scheduled various programs for this edition of the annual cultural event that is to be offered in two main sections.

The festival’s organizers have invited some 16 foreign poets from the countries including Denmark, France, Egypt, Germany, Sweden, the United States, Iraq and Algeria.

The German Nobel laureate Günter Wilhelm Grass has been also invited as a guest of honor at this year’s festival.

Grass is a German novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist, sculptor and recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The participants in the year’s literary event are to contend in different categories such as ‘Criticism and Research’, ‘Classic Poetry’, ‘Children and Young Adult’ and ‘Modern Poetry’.

Over 2000 poets from Iran and 15 other countries have taken part in last year’s festival that was held in the Iranian southern island of Kharg located in the Persian Gulf.

Iran holds the international Fajr poetry, film, theater, visual arts and music festivals every year to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
