Scientists to delve into Iran’s weather of 1m years ago

7 May 2014 - 23:04

TEHRAN, May 7 (MNA) – The head of Iranian Cavers and Speleologists Association (ICSA) has said Oxford scientists will examine Iran’s weather a million years ago.
Javad Nezamdoust told Mehr News that a group of geologists from University of Oxford would launch an examination of stalactite and stalagmite in cooperation of Iranian cave explorers to find the weather quality and precipitation patterns of Iran.

“In coming June, Iran’s minister of science, research, and technology will cooperate with ICSA and cave explorers will have an expedition to Razavi Khorasan province to collect samples of caves in northeastern Iran,” he told Mehr News.

“The expedition will find the years when Iran had received high precipitation and low precipitation,” he added, believing that the research results would greatly help the future of the earth.

However, he said that the technology was quite new in Iran, since “these scientists scan lime sediments.”

A group of British, Scottish, and Romanian geologists, Richard, Al, and Lika had an expedition in May 10 2011 to the region’s caves to investigate the quakes through examining faults and caves of northeastern Iran.
