28 Apr 2014 - 18:17

Tehran, April 28, IRNA – Visiting Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova Sunday evening visited the cultural and historical complex of Golestan Palace in Tehran.
She toured different parts of the complex including Emarat-e Badgir (Building of the Wind Towers) and Shams-ol-Emareh (Edifice of the Sun) which is the most stunning structures of the Golestan Palace.

She also toured Talar-e Aineh (Hall of Mirrors), Talar-e Adj (Hall of Ivory) and Talar-e Zoroof (Hall of Chinaware) which is a place where all the chinaware dedicated to Qajar kings by the European kings were put on display in show cases built for the purpose.

The Golestan Palace (The Rose Garden Palace) is the former royal Qajar complex in Iran?s capital city. It is the oldest of the historic monuments in Tehran and a world heritage.

The palace belongs to a group of royal buildings that were once enclosed within the mud-thatched walls of Tehran’s Historic Arg (citadel). The Arg was built during the reign of Tahmasb I (r. 1524-1576) of the Safavid dynasty (1502–1736).

Bokova arrived in Iran on Friday for a five-day visit which is taking place upon an invitation of Minister of Science, Research and Technology Reza Faraji Dana.

This is the first visit to Iran by a UNESCO director-general in ten years.

So far, she has met with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and visited historical sites in Fars and Kerman provinces including the Persepolis ruins and mausoleum of ancient Iranian poet Hafez in the provincial capital city of Shiraz in Fars Province and the Arg-e Bam (Bam Citadel) in Kerman Province.

She also attended a dinner banquet given to her honor by science minister.
