Iran still waiting for US response on UN envoy

8 Apr 2014 - 14:26

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's foreign ministry says it's still waiting for Washington's response on Tehran's pick for its new U.N. envoy.
The ambassador, Hamid Aboutalebi, was reportedly a member of a Muslim student group that held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days in the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said Tuesday that Iran will consider subsequent actions once it receives an "official answer from official channels."

She acknowledged that after President Hassan Rouhani's nomination of Abutalebi, the ministry had communicated with "relevant U.S. officials" but the envoy still hasn't been granted a visa for the U.S.

Her remarks came after the U.S. Senate on Monday approved a bill to bar Aboutalebi from entering the United States. But prospects for the bill in the House are unclear.
