Araqchi, Schmid agree on new Iran N-talks agenda

18 Mar 2014 - 8:09

Representatives from Iran and the six world powers have agreed on the agenda of the fresh round of talks over Tehran’s nuclear energy program in the Austrian capital city of Vienna.
Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, who is a top Iranian nuclear negotiator as well as Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, represented the Islamic Republic, while Helga Schmid, a deputy for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, represented the other side during the Monday evening meeting.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- Russia, China, France, Britain, and the US -- plus Germany are set to start their fresh round of talks over Tehran’s nuclear energy program in Vienna on Tuesday.

The negotiations are expected to last until Wednesday.

The Tuesday morning session of the talks is said to be presided over by Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Ashton, who represents the six countries. The talks will then continue at deputy level.

On Monday, Zarif said the new round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the six world powers will focus on uranium enrichment and Arak heavy water reactor.

The talks in Vienna are follow-up to earlier negotiations in the Austrian capital, which ended on February 20.

Zarif, who is Iran’s top negotiator in the talks, said at the time that both sides came up with a framework for comprehensive negotiations to reach a final agreement.
