11 Mar 2014 - 9:48

Tehran, March 10, IRNA – Islamic Republic of Iran?s new accredited ambassador to the Netherlands, Ali-Reza Jahangiri, was appointed on Monday, based on a proposal made by Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif and President Hassan Rouhani?s approval.
The IRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs Public Diplomacy and Media Affairs Office announced the news on Monday night, noting that Jahangiri?s previous post was managing director of the Foreign Ministry?s International Laws Office.

The new Iranian ambassador?s other previous positions also include the head of the Borders Affairs and Seas Rights Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran for legal affairs in international conferences.

Jahangir has a PhD in international laws.

Relations between the Netherlands and Iran existed since the 17th century. However, the relationship changed significantly after the Iranian Revolution.

The Netherlands was formally one of Iran?s leading trade partners in Europe. At least 65 Dutch companies have economic ties with the Islamic Republic.

In spite of economic sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, Shell, a UK-registered Anglo-Dutch oil company continues to buy billions in crude oil from Iran each year.

In 2011 Iran established a series of cultural exhibits showing pictures featuring Iran?s historical monuments and tourist attractions.
