Iran-P5+1 talks merely nuclear: Larijani

10 Mar 2014 - 11:35

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani says Tehran’s nuclear energy program is and will be the only subject on the agenda of the talks between Iran and the P5+1 group.

“The issue of Iran’s nuclear talks has nothing to do with other issues and we will solely have nuclear discussions” during the negotiation with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany, Larijani said in an interview with Al-Mayadeen TV on Sunday.

The top Iranian parliamentarian said that the West is after adventurism in nuclear negotiations while Iran is seeking a political settlement of the issue.

Referring to the comments made by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei that he is “not optimistic” about Iran’s nuclear talks with the P5 + 1 group, Larijani said “Iran’s Leader believes that the US does not seek to hold constructive talks… Experience has proved it.”

Earlier on February 17, Ayatollah Khamenei said that the nuclear issue is a pretext, adding that if the nuclear issue is resolved according to Washington’s wishes, the Americans will find new pretexts.

The Iranian Majlis speaker further said that nuclear negotiations between Iran and the sextet have long been underway and have nothing to do with Iran-US talks.

On February 12, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the country’s “peaceful” nuclear energy program will be the only issue on the agenda of talks.

“Except for Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities, no other issue was on the agenda of the talks with the P5+1 group in any of the previous stages and will not be on the agenda of future negotiations either,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham.

Over the past weeks, American officials have repeatedly said that Iran’s missiles would be addressed under a final nuclear deal with Tehran.

Experts from Iran and the six countries, who ended their latest round of talks on Friday in Ausrian capital,Vienna, are working to hammer out a comprehensive deal following the Geneva accord.

The next round of the high-level talks between Iran and the six other countries is to be held in Vienna on March 17.
