Iran’s FM urges political solution in Syria

26 Feb 2014 - 22:34

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has once again reaffirmed Tehran’s support for finding a solution to the Syrian crisis through political means and negotiations.
“There is no other solution, the only ones who can decide the future of Syria are the Syrian people…,” Zarif said during a joint press conference with his Qatari Counterpart Khalid al-Attiyah in Tehran on Wednesday.

However, Attiyah said regional countries are divided over the notion that the Syria conflict can be resolved solely through dialog.

Commenting on a question about the Tehran and Doha difference in views on Syria, Attiyah said that despite the differences the two countries agree on the point that Syria’s crisis must only be solved through political means.

Syria has been the scene of deadly violence since 2011. Over 130,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the unrest.

The Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria, according to reports.

The two officials also discussed bilateral relations and regional issues and underscored the need for enhancing cooperation between the two countries. Zarif said Iran and Qatar have agreed to set up a free trade zone.

They agreed to proceed with bilateral and multilateral consultation to find political and peaceful solutions to crises in the region.

Zarif pointed to his trip to Doha in December last year, describing the talks as positive.

“We are happy that today we continued those negotiations,” he added.

Attiyah, for his part, hailed agreements reached during his talks with Zarif.
