Tehran, Feb 19, IRNA - An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale jolted vicinity of Sardasht in southern province of Hormuzgan Wednesday morning.

According to seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the quake occurred at 04:33 hours local time (0103 GMT).


The epicenter of the quake was registered in an area located at 26.43 degrees latitude and 57.96 degrees longitude.

There is no report on any damage caused by the earthquake.

Iran sits on several major faultlines of the earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.

The worst in recent years hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city’s ancient mud-brick citadel.

The deadliest quake in the country was in June 1990 with the intensity of 7.7 Richter scale. About 37,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 injured in the northern provinces of Gilan and Zanjan.
