NAM raps Iranian diplomat's assassination in Yemen

24 Jan 2014 - 12:44

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has vehemently condemned the recent assassination of an Iranian diplomat in Yemen.
In a statement, the NAM Coordinating Bureau in the UN offered condolences to Iran and the family of the assassinated diplomat and called for the identification and punishment of those behind the attack.

On January 18, the commercial attaché of the Iranian embassy in Sana’a, Abolqasem Asadi, was gunned down by members of a terrorist group outside the Iranian ambassador’s residence in the Yemeni capital.

The assailants first tried to kidnap the Iranian diplomat but when they faced resistance, they opened fire on him. The diplomat, who sustained serious injuries, later passed away in hospital.

The NAM statement stressed that terrorism in all its forms was the greatest menace to global peace and security, adding that the scourge was unjustifiable regardless of the motivation behind it.
NAM underlined the need to counter threats against global peace and security based on the UN Charter and international law. It also stressed the responsibility of governments to safeguard the security of foreign diplomats as stipulated in Geneva Conventions.
Following the fatal shooting of the Iranian diplomat, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Yemeni chargé d'affaires to protest the incident.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Iranian Expatriates Affairs Hassan Qashqavi said on Wednesday that Tehran will soon dispatch a delegation to Yemen to investigate the assassination.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s Foreign Ministry denounced the attack, adding that authorities are determined to bring the attackers to justice.
