Israeli minister insults Kerry over so-called peace plan

14 Jan 2014 - 17:31

An Israeli minister has insulted the US Secretary of State John Kerry over his plan for the so-called peace process.
Based on Israeli media reports, Minister of Military Affairs Moshe Ya'alon said on Tuesday that Kerry’s proposed plan was not worth the paper it was written on.

Ya'alon reportedly made the remarks in private conversations with other Israeli officials.

He also accused Kerry of being naïve, implying that he is a nuisance.

Kerry’s proposals for the so-called peace process include a security plan for the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank.

Under this plan, Israeli forces must withdraw from the Jordan Valley. Tel Aviv is opposed to the proposal.

This comes days after reports said that the Israeli Housing Ministry was planning to build over 1,076 settler units in the illegally annexed East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and 801 more in the occupied West Bank.

A previous round of talks between Palestinians and Israel stalled in September 2010 after Israel refused to freeze settlement activities.

More than half a million Israelis currently live in over 120 illegal settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.

The settlements are considered illegal by the United Nations and many countries because the territories were seized by Israel in a war in 1967 and are hence subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbid construction on occupied lands.
