US: Iran does nothing to show interest in taking part in conference on Syria

8 Jan 2014 - 10:40

Baku-APA. The United States believes that Iran “has done nothing” to show the international community its interest in taking part in an international conference on Syria, spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of States Jen Psaki said on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Itar-Tass.
“At this point, Iran has done nothing but helped the regime, help bring foreign fighters in, help the regime’s efforts to brutalise the Syrian people,” Psaki told reporters. “If they wanted to send a message to the world about their seriousness of having a positive outcome, there are steps they could take. There’s no indication that they have any desire or interest in taking any of these steps,” she said.

Psaki reiterated the U.S. position, according to which, Iran should not participate in the international conference on Syria, which was scheduled for January 22 in Montreux, Switzerland, as it had not approved the Geneva communiqu? of June 30, 2012. She said that if they (Iranian representatives) agreed to return to the Geneva 1 documents, the U.S. side would consider it. But so far there were no indications that Iran would do it.
