Iran must attend Syria peace conference: Syrian envoy

3 Jan 2014 - 14:18

A Syrian diplomat says Iran plays an important and undeniable role in resolving regional and international issues, stressing the importance of Tehran’s participation in the upcoming international talks on the crisis in Syria.
No one can ignore Iran’s leading role in the settlement of regional and international developments, Syria’s Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud said on Friday.

Those who turn a blind eye to Iran’s influential role in regional developments and resolving Mideast issues are in fact isolating themselves, he added.
“Disregard for Iran’s role is tantamount to overlooking tangible and clear realities,” he underscored.
He said Iran’s stance on the necessity to stop terrorist activities in Syria, prevent the infiltration of terrorists into the country, end financial, arms and training support for terrorist Takfiri groups, honor Syrians’ right to self-determination and respect Syria’s sovereignty and independence, is  in line with international regulations and the United Nations’ resolutions.

Everyone except the US, Israel and terrorist groups in Syria and their supporters, underline the importance of Iran’s participation in the Geneva II conference, he stated.

On December 29, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said Iran will definitely participate in the international conference on Syria if invited without any preconditions.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a country that advocates a political settlement of the Damascus crisis, has expressed preparedness to devote all its efforts to resolving the crisis diplomatically, as it has taken effective measures in this regard,” she said.

The conference is scheduled to be held in Switzerland in two parts. On January 22, the opening session of the event will take place in the Swiss city of Montreux, and then it will be moved to the UN office in Geneva on January 24.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly crisis since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
