MP faces criminal proceedings after calling for review

31 Dec 2013 - 11:45

The Tehran prosecutor has announced that proceedings have begun against Ali Motahari, the Iranian MP who recently called for a review of prison sentences issued following the 2009 election protests.
IRNA reports that according to an informed source, criminal proceedings against Motahari have been launched in the fourth branch of the culture and media court.

On Sunday December 29, Ali Motahari criticized the house arrest of opposition leaders MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi and called for a review of the “severe sentences” against the prisoners of 2009.

In 2009, many reformist figures were given heavy prison sentences after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s election victory was challenged with allegations of vote fraud.

Despite the recent change in the administration, there has been little change in the situation of these prisoners.
