Iran urges rapid punishment of Beirut bomb attack culprits

27 Dec 2013 - 22:20

Iran Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the deadly car bomb attack in the central part of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, calling for the immediate identification and punishment of the perpetrators.
In a Friday statement, the Foreign Ministry also offered condolences to the families of the victims of the attack.
“Undoubtedly, the resistant people from all walks of life and all political and social currents in Lebanon, while maintaining their unity and national cohesion, will cut the hands of those who violate the sovereignty, national unity and stability of the country and will not allow foreign meddlers, above all the usurper Zionist regime (of Israel), to achieve their ominous goals,” the statement added.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry pointed to the sensitive situation across the Middle East and expressed confidence that the Lebanese nation and political factions will foil the evil plot hatched by Israel and its mercenaries to destabilize Lebanon and incite tribal division in the country.

At least five people were killed and over 70 others injured after a huge car bomb went off near the headquarters of Lebanon’s March 14 Alliance and the parliament in the capital, Beirut, on Friday.

A senior figure of the March 14 Alliance and former finance minister, Mohammad Shatah, and a companion of his were among those killed in the blast. Shatah also served as an adviser to the country’s ex-prime minister, Saad al-Hariri.

The Lebanese capital has been hit by several deadly bomb attacks over the past few months.
