Majlis will respond to any new US sanctions: MP

27 Dec 2013 - 11:38

A senior Iranian legislator says Iran’s Majlis will respond to any measure by the US Congress to pass a proposed bill to impose new sanctions against the Islamic Republic over its nuclear energy program.
“Any wrong move by the US Congress in the form of approving a sanctions bill targeting officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be given a similar response by the Majlis,” Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Deputy Chairman Mansour Haqiqatpour said on Wednesday.
He also stated that the ratification of such a bill could put an end to nuclear negotiations, and Tehran may opt not to continue negotiations in the wake of such sanctions.

The Iranian lawmaker said the US Congress must honor the commitment that top American nuclear negotiator Wendy Sherman made in the form of the Geneva deal.

Three top US senators have begun circulating a draft of a new Iran sanctions bill that violates the terms of the interim deal struck between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain -- plus Germany in Geneva on November 24 to pave the way for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

The new sanctions bill, proposed by Robert Menendez of New Jersey, Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), is likely to come to vote after the Senate returns from winter recess on January 6.

The bill broadens the scope of the sanctions already imposed against Iran over Tehran’s nuclear energy program, and sets tough conditions for a possible final deal with Iranian nuclear negotiators.
