The Islamic Republic of Iran says a central plank of its foreign policy is to enhance its relations with neighboring countries.
“The foreign policy priority of Mr. [Hassan] Rouhani [, the Iranian president,]’s administration is to boost cooperation with neighboring countries, namely the Persian Gulf littoral states,” said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Majid Takht-e Ravanchi.

The Iranian diplomat who was on a trip to Sweden made the comment in a meeting with scholars and researchers as well as foreign ambassadors at Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)

The visiting Iranian official also elaborated on Tehran’s positions on regional issues and touched upon Iran’s cultural and religious commonalities with its neighbors.

For his part, Chairman of the SIPRI Governing Board Goran Lennmarker hailed the recent nuclear agreement between Iran and the Sextet of world powers.

On November 24, Iran and six major world powers sealed an interim deal in Geneva to pave the way for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

Lennmarker also underlined SIPRI’s resolve to continue cooperation with the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) of Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

During his two-day visit to Stockholm, Takht-e Ravanchi met with several high-ranking Swedish officials, including Swedish Parliament Speaker Per Westerberg and the country’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.
