Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi has arrived in the Iranian capital of Tehran to discuss regional issues, including the Syria crisis, with Iranian officials.
Halqi arrived in Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport on Friday afternoon and was welcomed by Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Halqi’s trip to Iran comes ahead of a January 22, 2014, international meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, which aims to address the crisis in Syria. The meeting, commonly referred to as Geneva 2, is seen as a follow-up to a first meeting that was also held in the Swiss city in June 2012.

Halqi had traveled to Tehran in early August to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

From the outset of the crisis in Syria in March 2011, Iran has been urging for a diplomatic solution to the conflict and has strongly opposed any foreign intervention and the militancy in the Arab country.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.
