Iran nuclear program biggest cause of instability: UK

23 Nov 2013 - 20:03

British Foreign Secretary William Hague says Iran’s nuclear program is the greatest cause of instability in the region and in world affairs.
“The Iranian nuclear program is one of the biggest threats to the stability of the Middle East, one of the greatest causes of instability, in the Middle East and in world affairs,” Hague, who is in the Swiss city of Geneva, told reporters on Saturday.

Iran and the six powers - the US, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany - began their latest round of talks on Wednesday. The present round of talks was scheduled to end on Friday, but was extended into Saturday.

Hague described the ongoing negotiations as “very important”, “vital” and “very difficult”, adding all the foreign ministers of the six countries have come to Geneva to support the talks and “confer together easily and quickly if we need to make fresh decisions of any kind.”

He acknowledged that there are “narrow” gaps between the parties but said that the differences were “very important.”

Hague also stressed that any deal between Iran and the Sextet over the country’s nuclear energy program must be “thorough, detailed and comprehensive.”

Iran and the six countries are working to hammer out an interim deal to pave the way for final resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

During the previous talks held in early November, the two sides came very close to a deal, which failed to materialize, due to the position adopted by France in support of the Israeli regime.
