TEHRAN (FNA)- Four drilling rigs are now used in the drilling operations in Azar oil field, west of the country, but the number of operating rigs will rise to 6 to speed up the operation, managing director of the Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC) Hosseinnejad said.

Azar oil field, which Iran shares with Iraq, is located in Anaran Block in west of the country. Under development plan of the field, it is about 19 wells to be drilled in the field by NIDC, Persia Company and Kish Petro Tech Global Company.

After examination of technical and economical aspects of the oil field in 2007, it became clear that development of Azar oil field was viable and in 2011 a contract was signed for its development between PEDEC and OPIC.

Development plan of Azar oil is underway with the aim of producing 30 thousand barrels per day in the framework of an early production plan and production of 65 thousand barrels per day in the final stage.

Early production plan is scheduled to come online in the beginning of 2015 while achieving production of 65 thousand barrels per day of oil is planned for August 2016.

The oil field is located 20 km southeast of Mehran city, west of Iran. In Iraq, it is named Badrah oil field.
