Red carpet welcome expected for Hollande in Israel

16 Nov 2013 - 14:23

French President Francois Hollande is heading to Israel where he expects a red carpet welcome over Paris’s disruptive role in the course of the recent nuclear talks between Iran and the six world powers in Geneva.
Hollande arrives in Israel on Sunday and is reportedly slated to deliver a speech at the Israeli parliament (Knesset) on Monday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro published on Saturday that he is “impatient” to meet Hollande whom he described as “a close friend” of Israel.

Netanyahu added that he is looking forward to hosting the French president “at a time when the major powers, including France, are discussing ways to halt the Iranian nuclear program.”
“For us, the United States remains an important ally, the most important ally. But our relationship with France is also very special,” the Israeli premier said.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who played Israel’s advocate during nuclear talks last weekend, is accompanying Hollande.

Tehran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United states -- plus Germany discussed Iran’s nuclear energy program behind closed doors in Geneva from November 7 to November 10.

France has been blamed for spoiling the nuclear talks which are to resume again in Geneva on November 20.

At the beginning of the third day of the nuclear talks on November 9, Fabius said in an interview that “Israel’s concerns” must be taken into consideration in the course of the negotiations.

In recent days, the Israeli prime minister has repeatedly warned the six world powers against striking a “bad and dangerous” nuclear deal with Iran.

On November 13, he warned that such a “bad deal” may trigger a war.
