A senior Iranian lawmaker says it is in the West’s own interest to reach a deal with Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program because the peaceful nuclear activities of the country will never stop.
“Practically, Iran has mastered all aspects of this science (nuclear technology) and it is to the benefit of the West to reach an agreement with Iran in that respect because Iran’s train of peaceful nuclear activities will never stop, and the US and the Western countries have comprehended this fact very well,” said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Majlis, on Friday.
“Given the West’s economic turmoil and their losses as a result of imposing sanctions on Iran as well as the failure of the bans to affect our nuclear activities, it seems the whole situation has led them (Western governments) to conclude that understanding is more advantageous than the perpetuation of the policy of confrontation with the Islamic Republic,” he added.
The Iranian legislator noted that the ground has been prepared for easing the sanctions against Iran, and reaffirmed Tehran’s determination in nuclear talks if the other side is serious as well.

Boroujerdi described the ongoing nuclear talks as a litmus test for the US and Western countries to prove their sincerity.

The negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain- plus Germany over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program began in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday. The US secretary of state and the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany joined the talks on Friday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, his US counterpart John Kerry and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton held trilateral talks also on Friday in the Swiss city.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, who is also a member of Iran’s nuclear negotiating team, described the meeting as “productive.”

He added that the talks, which are aimed at hammering out a draft deal on Tehran’s nuclear case, are set to continue on Saturday.
