Senior Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi says the Islamic Republic’s Majlis supports the promotion of friendly relations with European countries.
“Majlis backs the policies of the new [Iranian] administration to expand friendly ties between Iran and European countries based on mutual respect and in line with the interests of both sides,” said the chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Majlis on Tuesday.

The parliamentarian made the remarks in a meeting with Norwegian Ambassador to Iran Jens Petter Kjemprud, who underlined his country favors closer economic and trade cooperation with Iran.

Commenting on the West’s dispute over Tehran’s nuclear energy program, Boroujerdi said, “Iran’s nuclear activities are completely transparent, without any ambiguity and under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

“There is no room in Iran’s defense doctrine for the development of an atomic bomb, and Iran is against the existence of even one single nuclear bomb in the world,” Boroujerdi added.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program. Iran has categorically rejected the allegation.

Also commenting on the ongoing crisis in Syria, Boroujerdi said Iran has supported the idea of finding a political solution to the Syria conflict since the beginning of the unrest in the Arab country.

“The establishment of a lasting ceasefire and security as well as leaving the fate of Syria in the hands of the people of this country will play a major role in restoring peace until the 2014 election,” the Iranian lawmaker said.

Syria has been gripped by deadly crisis since 2011 in which more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced.
