West must give appropriate response to Iran: Zarif

3 Nov 2013 - 22:15

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has urged European countries to give an “appropriate response” to Iran’s new developments and approach.
“The Iranian administration and people expect a practical change in the West’s approach based on respect,” Zarif said in a meeting with Austrian Deputy Foreign Minister Reinhold Lopatka in Tehran on Sunday.

He called on European countries and human rights organizations to carefully look at Iran’s political and social developments and realities.

The Iranian minister expressed Iran’s readiness to use all its capacities to cooperate with European countries on bilateral, regional and international issues, particularly on the improvement of stability and security in the region.

He also pointed to Iran’s recent nuclear talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the group of six major world powers, and urged European countries to play an “effective, constructive and independent” role in reinforcing the ongoing “political trend” to resolve the existing issues.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - plus Germany held two days of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear energy program in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 15-16. The two sides have agreed to meet again in the Swiss city on November 7-8.

Meanwhile, Iran and the IAEA wrapped up two days of negotiations in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on October 29, which was described afterwards by both sides as “very productive.”
Zarif further said the West’s threats and sanctions against Iran have failed to yield results, adding, “Sanctions will only affect the daily lives of Iranians and [therefore] add to their pessimism and distrust of the West.”
The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and the European Union using the unsubstantiated claim as an excuse to impose illegal sanctions against Tehran.

The bans come on top of four rounds of US-instigated UN Security Council sanctions against Iran under the same pretext.

Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, stressing that as a committed member of the IAEA and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The Austrian official, for his part, expressed his country’s determination to improve relations with Iran in all fields and hold constant consultation with Iranian officials on key regional and international developments.
