21 Sep 2012 - 17:19

In their powerful presence in military parades honoring the Sacred Defense Week, Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran displayed Iran's latest achievements in defense and military hardware.

The Sacred Defense Week commemorates the braveries of the Iranian soldiers who fought in the 1980-1988 Iraqi-imposed war and defended their country from enemy aggressions.

The ceremony opening the 'Sacred Defense Week' started on Friday morning with military parades by major divisions from Iran's Army, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Basij voluntary forces at the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, in southern Tehran.

In the military parades mark the eight-year Sacred Defense against Saddam Hussein's army, Iran's army unveiled S-200 missile system and Raad (Thunder) air defense system.

Raad, an all- Iranian-made air defense system, reportedly equipped with Tier 2 missiles, is capable of hitting targets at a distance of 50 kilometers (30 miles) and at an altitude of 22,000 meters (75,000 feet).

Referring to the design and construction of Raad air defense systems, Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said that the system has been made to confront with American aircrafts.

During the parades, Qadr-F missile with 2000 kilometers range, Sejjil, Fateh 110, Khalij Fars (Persian Gulf), Qiam, and Shahab 2 missiles were also put on display.

The ceremony is participated by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and senior military officials.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a speech at the ceremony in commemoration of the defense against the invasion.

"Our sacred defense was not defending a territory, a nation or a school of thought alone. It was well beyond that. It was defending human dignity, the rights of all nations and those of the oppressed people of the world,” President Ahmadinejad said.

Also, on the sidelines of the ceremony, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Hassan Firouzabadi told reporters Iran is not frightened by Israel’s ravings, stressing that the Islamic Republic will deliver a prompt, immediate response to any attack on its territory.

Firouzabadi said that the Israeli military officials have announced in their estimations of Iran’s military power that Tel Aviv lacks the capability to launch a military operation against Tehran and that a possible war with the Islamic Republic will not be to their interest.

The Iranian officials have promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.
