US anti-Iran sanctions form of genocide: Lawyer

26 Oct 2013 - 12:20

The US is committing “genocide” with its anti-Iran sanctions, which have endangered the lives of a large number of Iranian patients by causing a shortage of medications, an international lawyer tells Press TV.
In an interview on Friday, Alfred Lambremont Webre said the US-led “sanctions are a form of genocide and they are a form of crime against humanity.”
He added that the sanctions are in violation of the “standards in the UN Declaration of Human Rights and in standards such as the Nuremberg principles, which go against crimes against humanity where you are depriving systematically medicines from the children of a country.”
Webre drew a parallel between the sanctions against Iran and the embargoes imposed on Iraq in the 1990s.
“The United States has been… committing genocide against the children of Iran in the same way that it committed genocide against the children of Iraq and the reports are that over 1.5 million Iraqi women and children and civilians died during that war and during the period of the sanctions,” he stated.
Iranian patients suffering from rare diseases are worst affected by the illegal US-engineered sanctions imposed against Iran over the country’s civilian nuclear activities.

Cancer patients and hemophiliacs are hit worst by the unilateral sanctions as the bans hinder Iran’s international financial transactions and thus harm attempts to import vital medicine.
