Zarif to brief MPs on Geneva nuclear talks

23 Oct 2013 - 22:49

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will appear before Majlis next week to present a report on the latest talks between the Islamic Republic and six major world powers in Geneva on Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Iranian Expatriates Affairs Hassan Qashqavi said on Wednesday that Zarif will brief the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee on the Geneva nuclear talks on October 27.

Zarif was scheduled to present a report on Geneva meeting to Iranian lawmakers this week, but the program was cancelled due to his back pain.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain - plus Germany held two days of negotiations over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program in the Swiss city of Geneva on October 15-16.

A joint statement issued by the two sides read, "The participants also agreed that E3+3 and Iranian nuclear, scientific and sanctions experts will convene before the next meeting to address differences and to develop practical steps."

Zarif described the talks as “extensive” and “fruitful.”

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also hailed the nuclear talks as the “most detailed” and most “substantive” ever held between the two sides.

During a closed-door meeting on October 15, Zarif presented Iran’s proposal titled "Closing an Unnecessary Crisis, and Opening a New Horizon" to Ashton and the representatives of the six countries. The details of the proposal will remain confidential for the time being.

Iran and the six major world powers have agreed to meet again in Geneva on November 7-8.
