Political will key to Iran nuclear issue: Envoy

18 Oct 2013 - 12:20

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaei says the standoff over Tehran’s nuclear energy program can be quickly resolved if the six powers involved in negotiations over the issue show the same political will as Iran to clear up ambiguities.
“If the opposite sides, too, have the political will and show in practice that they recognize the Iranian nation’s nuclear rights to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, the negotiations will bear fruit in a short period of time,” Khazaei told reporters on Thursday.

He further reaffirmed that Iran has never strayed from its civilian nuclear agenda, and said it would not be complicated to allay suspicions created “by some” over the Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear work.
“If the opposite sides, in addition to [having] serious political will, present logical proposals in line with international regulations and the Iranian nation’s rights, negotiations will not be prolonged, and will produce positive results,” the Iranian envoy pointed out.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain - plus Germany held two days of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear energy program behind closed doors in the Swiss city of Geneva on October 15-16.

During a meeting on October 15, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif presented Iran’s proposal titled "Closing an Unnecessary Crisis, Opening a New Horizon" to EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton, and the representatives of the six countries. The two sides agreed to keep the details of the proposal confidential for the time being.

Following the negotiations, Ashton lauded the talks as the most “detailed” and “substantive” ever between the two sides, describing Iran’s new proposal as an “important contribution.”

Iran and the six powers agreed to meet again in Geneva on November 7-8.
