MP praises efforts to improve Iran-British ties

9 Oct 2013 - 14:44

Tehran, Oct 9, IRNA – Head of Iran-Britain Friendship Group Abbas Ali Mansouri said Wednesday that recent efforts made by foreign ministers of the two countries to improve bilateral ties to the level of non-resident charge d’affaires were positive
On Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the country’s House of Commons that in his talks with Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif in New York the two “have discussed how to improve the functioning of the UK-Iran bilateral relationship.

“I have made it very clear to Mr Zarif that we are open to more direct contact and further improvements in our bilateral relationship. We have therefore agreed that both our countries will now appoint a non-resident chargé d’affaires tasked with implementing the building of relations, including interim steps on the way towards eventual re-opening of both our embassies, as well as dialogue on other issues of mutual concern.”

Commenting on the issue, the Iranian MP told IRNA today that upgrading bilateral ties to the level of non-resident charge d’affaires indicated the importance the international community attached to the government of President Hassan Rouhani.

Mansouri stressed the level of Tehran-London relations should be “promoted to the extent that was confirmed by the Iranian parliament.”

He said further discussions should be made by the Iranian MPs to decide over any changes in Iran-UK relations in the future.

During the past two months, Mansouri noted, proper diplomatic moves have been made by the government of President Rouhani by initiating inventive measures at the international levels.

The MP added that promotion of Iran’s international relations would have positive impact on its economic and cultural developments.
