Iran urges positive Germany role in nuclear talks

7 Oct 2013 - 15:41

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has called on Germany to play a positive role in the settlement the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
In a Monday meeting with Germany’s new Ambassador to Tehran Michael Baron von Ungern, Rouhani expressed hope that Berlin would play a “positive and constructive role” at the upcoming Geneva talks to resolve the nuclear issue.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton said on September 26 that the next round of negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany would be held October 15-16 in Geneva.

Ashton made the remarks after a meeting between the foreign ministers of Iran and the six countries at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Iran and the six major world powers have held several rounds of talks on a range of issues, with the main focus being on Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
Rouhani noted that Iran is itself a victim of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and added, “Due to its religious beliefs, Iran considers the use of WMD unethical and illogical.”
Reiterating the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities, Rouhani added that Tehran seeks to exercise its right to nuclear energy within the framework of international law without being subjected to discrimination.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran categorically rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
