US keenness for talks shows Iran power: Minister

1 Oct 2013 - 11:42

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan says the US and Western countries’ willingness to engage in talks with Tehran attests to the power and dignity of the Iranian nation.
“The Iranian nation is now in a position that the US president (Barack Obama) contacts our president (Hassan Rouhani) in order to hear Iranians’ voice. This is a matter of pride for us,” IRNA quoted him as saying on Monday.

He made the comments following President Rouhani’s recent visit to New York to deliver a speech at the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly.

“There might be different attitudes towards what happened last week. Nevertheless, the US president’s move, and that Western and European heads of state lined up to meet with Rouhani can be indicative of our nation’s glory and might,” Dehqan said in reference to the historic telephone conversation between the Iranian and US presidents.

Meanwhile, Dehqan expressed hope that the Iranian nation will tread the path of dignity and pride.

Rouhani received a call from Obama on September 27 as he was in a car heading to the John F. Kennedy International Airport to fly back to Tehran.

The two heads of state stressed Tehran and Washington’s political will to swiftly resolve the West’s dispute over Iran’s nuclear energy program, and exchanged viewpoints on various topics, including cooperation on different regional issues.

During the telephone conversation, Rouhani and Obama also assigned Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry to quickly set the stage for cooperation between the two countries.

The phone conversation was the first direct communication between the Iranian and US presidents since Iran's Islamic Revolution of 1979.
