Velayati says he has no clue why Obama, Rouhani talk

29 Sep 2013 - 17:53

TEHRAN, Sep. 29 (MNA) – Supreme Leader’s International Affairs Advisor has asserted the conduct of Iranian delegation was ‘well thought-out,’ but he says he had no clue why Obama and Rouhani talked.
Mehr News quoted Ali Akbar Velayati, Iran’s former FM talking to The Islamic Republic of Iran News Network’s Morning with News. “Planned negotiation in the framework put forth by the Supreme Leader based on three principles of esteem, wisdom, and interests, is among the tools a diplomat is in need of; however, I would have no clue as to why a phone call took place between Obama and Rouhani,” he said.

“No country would act according to our interests, and naturally they would seek their own national interests; it is far from being wise to expect otherwise. And the US is not an exception to this rule,” Velayati added, saying that “the US has not viewed our revolution positively since its inception, and did not want an Islamic Republic in the region, where interests of Iranian people are preferred and upheld over US interests.”

Velayati attributed the US resentment to 2 factors. “First, Iran was a powerful country in the region; and second, Iran sought to present an example for other nations in the region,” he said.
