China supports ‘communication’ in Iran nuclear talks

25 Sep 2013 - 22:52

China has thrown its weight behind increased contact and “communication” among all sides involved in the talks over the Iranian nuclear energy program.
“We support parties concerned with Iran's nuclear issue intensifying communication and increasing mutual trust, as these are conducive to the development of talks,” Xinhua quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei as saying during a Wednesday press conference.

The Chinese official made remarks in reaction to a question regarding Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s Tuesday speech at the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

President Rouhani told the session that the Iranian nation is ready for cooperation with the international community and all rational players based on equal footing and mutual respect.

Hong further reiterated that Beijing has always supported dialogue as the only solution to settle the Western standoff over Iran’s nuclear energy program.

The Chinese diplomat further called on the P5+1 group of world powers, comprising the US, UK, France, China, and Russia plus Germany, to revive nuclear talks with Tehran as soon as possible in an effort to end tensions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will take part in the foreign-ministerial-level talks between Iran and the P5+1 group, which are scheduled to be held on the margins of the General Assembly session on Thursday, said Hong.

The US, Israel and some of their allies falsely claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with Washington and the European Union using the unfounded allegation as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.

Iran vehemently rejects the groundless claim over its nuclear energy activities, maintaining that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
