At least 16 people have been killed and several others wounded after a bomb explosion ripped through a funeral in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
According to Iraqi security officials, a bomber detonated explosives inside a tent where a funeral ceremony was being held in Baghdad’s southern neighborhood of Dora on Sunday.

At least 35 mourners were also wounded due to the deadly incident.

The attack took place one day after nearly 70 people were killed and scores of others wounded in a spate of terrorist attacks across the violence-stricken country. Saturday was the deadliest day Iraq has seen since August 28, when similar attacks claimed 75 lives in the country.

Earlier in the day, two Iraqi security forces lost their lives and dozens more were injured in two separate bomb attacks in the country’s northern city of Kirkuk.

Violence has spiked across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.

According to the United Nations, more than 5,000 people have been killed in violence in Iraq so far this year. The number of casualties for Baghdad, the worst hit province, has been 800 in August alone.

July was Iraq's deadliest month in five years with 1,057 people killed and 2,326 wounded in terrorist attacks.

The Iraqi government says al-Qaeda-linked groups and members of the outlawed Ba’ath Party are behind the surge in terrorist attacks in the country.
