EU threatens Iran with tough diplomatic action

12 Sep 2013 - 15:30

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The European Union is threatening Iran with tough diplomatic action if it doesn’t cooperate with UN inspectors trying to determine whether it has worked on nuclear arms.
The EU has told the UN nuclear watchdog that action is possible if Iran does not cooperate by November. That’s diplomatic code for renewed referral to the UN Security Council, potentially opening the path to new sanctions. Western countries fear Iran may be developing a capacity to build nuclear weapons. But Iran says its programme is purely peaceful. Negotiations between Iran and the UN over the past two years have failed to end the deadlock. The two sides will meet again on September 27th.

Meanwhile, the US says it has seen troubling developments in Iran’s nuclear programme and calls on the country’s new president to take concrete steps to ease concerns about Tehran’s aims. US Ambassador Joseph Macmanus said Washington was ready to work with the new Iranian government to reach a diplomatic solution about Iran’s nuclear programme.
